De Jager back in Toti court

According to Rev Liezel de Jager's parents, Werner de Jager is a danger to himself.

BAIL application has resumed in the Werner de Jager case at the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court today (January 24).

The court has just heard a statement from Reverend Liezel de Jager’s parents, in which they ask for bail to be denied.

De Jager is charged with killing his wife, Reverend Liezel de Jager, on October 2021, at their home in Amanzimtoti. The investigation ground to a halt until the intervention of Action Society, a civil rights group, saw it being transferred to the SAPS National Cold Case Investigative Unit, which made the arrest in November 23, 2023.

In the statement read by prosecutor Gayle Greyling, the parents, Henk and Salomé van Zyl, said Werner has psychological issues and cannot be trusted to look after himself. They said these issues became apparent after the birth of his youngest daughter.

The parents alleged that between 2015 and 2021, he tried to commit suicide 12 times using different methods. These included wrist-cutting, stabbing himself and gassing himself inside the car.

Werner, through his attorney, has denied that he planned the murder of his wife.
