THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) is appealing to the public to help sustain the diet of some of its residents by collecting flying ants and dropping them off at its centre.

Crow’s operations director and herpetologist, Clint Halkett-Siddall, said flying ants make a high-protein meal for wild birds and small mammals.
“We appeal to the public to help us catch flying ants when they come out. Residents are welcome to drop them off at our centre, situated at 15A Coedmore Avenue, Yellowwood Park. If you can’t immediately bring the flying ants to the centre, you can freeze them and contact us,” said Halkett-Siddall.
Ways to catch flying ants:
• You can catch them with your hands and place them in a bottle.
• Switch off the lights, take a torch and balance it over a bucket.
• Put a bucket under a spot of light on the wall.
• Fill a pipe with cardboard, and insert it into a flying ant mound. Leave it for a couple of days, and the flying ants should come into the tube.
