Public educated on the benefits of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy

The focus of the event was to educate the community on renewable energy and ways to help fight climate change.

AIMED at educating the public on the benefits of transitioning from fossil fuels and renewable energy, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted its Just Transition Exhibit at the Merebank Regional Hall last week.

The exhibit hosted about 150 participants from surrounding areas in south Durban, such as KwaMakhutha, Reservoir Hills, Merebank and Wentworth, among others.

There were also three solar companies, Enway Power Solutions, Rocketworks and Alumo Energy, who showcased their companies and shared the benefits of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Kershni Ramreddi, SDCEA’s Energy and Just Transition project officer, said the event focused on a Just Transition for South Africa and how renewable energy alternatives are the key to a sustainable future.

“There were breakout sessions and guest speakers to discuss community concerns and innovative solutions to help combat the climate crisis. They shared knowledge that people could take back to their communities and educate those who are unaware of the crisis at hand.

“We also discussed how communities can become socially owned and produce their own energy alternatives that will be sustainable for their communities. The day was all about sharing the necessary knowledge with communities from experts on renewable energy and dealing with solutions that will aid the surrounding areas,” she said.

The day also included fun activities such as a competition and prize giveaways.

“This was a positive way to enable active participation from everyone.”

Ramreddi said that South Africa desperately needs to move towards a Just Transition, one that is fair and equal for all.

“However, in order to do this, education is something we need to keep sharing – no matter the circumstances, we are always learning at any given time, age or place.

“We need to keep pushing for the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and continue to work towards achieving our goals as South Africans,” she said.
