eThekwini on high alert amid heavy rains

Disaster management teams are on standby in high-risk areas.

AS ETHEKWINI Municipality announced its readiness to deal with the heavy rains that are forecast to continue, Ward 97 residents have been asked to report any storm-related damage and flooding directly to Councillor André Beetge on 082 718 8137.

This came after the South Coast recorded 44.6mm of rain in 12 hours on Monday, causing significant waterlogging on several roads. On the same day, eThekwini’s head of Disaster Management and Emergency Control, Vincent Ngubane, delivered a comprehensive briefing to the executive committee in a special virtual meeting.

eThekwini spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the briefing outlined the City’s proactive response to heavy rains throughout the municipality.

“The eThekwini Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has established a routine of providing updates to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) every three hours, ensuring a continuous flow of information regarding any incidents that may arise,” said Sisilana.

She added that the City has proactively activated standby teams to monitor high-risk areas.

When reporting the damage to Councillor Beetge, the caller should provide their contact number, the location of the problem, the nature of the problem and the services required. Alternatively, the City’s 24-hour emergency hotline number is 031 361 0000.
