School launches book club

The school wants to promote the love of reading among learners.

ISOLEMAMBA Secondary School recently celebrated the launch of the learners’ book club which was started to cultivate and nurture a love of reading.

The school is in the Nsimbini area, and the Readers’ Collectives Book Club formation was spearheaded by the school’s departmental head of languages, Beata Khanyile. She said the intention of promoting the reading of books is to put an end to the crisis of low literacy skills among the youth.

“This crisis is always revealed whenever literacy statistics are announced. I believe that such interventions will be of massive help to our learners. In an era where digital distractions are at their peak, the power of a book will never be substituted. It pains me, though, that books are still a luxury in most households in our communities,” said Khanyile.

She said it is important for parents to invest in their children’s learning as teachers cannot do it by themselves.

“A little help from them will go a very long way. Each child should not go to bed each day without having read a chapter or two. I would like to extend my huge gratitude to the following God-sent people for their amazing contributions and support for the success of our launch: Sthembele Msomi, who is the club’s co-ordinator; Manichand Beharilal of Roundhill Books, Bargain Books of Galleria; Mbali Mamvelase Gumede who was the guest speaker, and Zothini Ndimande of eThekwini Libraries and Heritage,” she said.
