“Regardless of whether your garden sprawls across acres or is tucked into a cosy corner, the lush year-round planting season along South Africa’s East Coast beckons. Whether your passion lies in nurturing vibrant blooms, stately trees, or bountiful vegetables and herbs, we advise you to delve into the nuances of the right planting month for each variety,” says Granger.

“In your quest for a greener, more sustainable haven, always remain on the lookout for eco-conscious options that align with our Earth’s well-being, as well as plants that cater to your specific needs,” Granger emphasises.

“As October unfurls its petals, spring awakens with zest. With the arrival of warmer weather and longer days, the perfect window of opportunity for planting vegetables is upon us. Now is the time to introduce an array of delightful items into your garden, including pumpkins, beetroot, beans, brinjals (eggplants), lettuce, tomatoes and the beloved KZN chillies. Keep in mind that certain crops, such as tomatoes, chillies, lettuce, peppers and brinjals, benefit from a stint in trays before finding their permanent home in the soil beds,” Granger advises.

He explains that for carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, leeks, radishes and spinach, the soil is their canvas for thriving.

Here are fun tips for planting your vegetables and herbs shared by the garden experts of the facility:

  • Proper spacing is a key to the happiness of your vegetables.
  • Avoid overcrowding their domain.
  • Choose companion plants that aid growth and eliminate the need for unsightly pesticides, which can be harmful to bothersome insects and beneficial ones.
  • For the perfect garden companions, consider planting pumpkins alongside corn, peas, melons, radishes, lettuce, marigolds and nasturtium.
  • If tomatoes are your star players, invite basil, beans and asparagus into their realm.
  • Peppers flourish with the company of basil, chives, carrots, onions and spinach.
