Toti imposter captain warning

A man fraudulently claiming to be a police officer from the Amanzimtoti Police Station has been asking for donations.

THE Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum (ACPF) has issued a warning about a man who is approaching residents asking for donations, claiming to be Captain Govender from the Amanzimtoti Police Station.

In a statement, the ACPF said there is no officer with that rank and name at the police station.

“Residents should not be conned into giving any money or items to this individual and are encouraged to report him if approached. The Police Act of 1995 section 68(1) clearly states that impersonating and falsely pretending to be a law enforcement officer is a serious criminal offence. Any campaigns to fundraise or collect items that will further the work of law enforcement should always be done through proper channels, including through the ACPF and the Social Crime Forum, referencing official letters and documents,” the statement said.

Residents are encouraged to notify the police on 10111 should they be approached by this individual.
