Amanzimtoti police station communication officer Captain Charlene van der Spuy said, “Our management would like to warn motorists about escalating hijackings occurring in Amanzimtoti and surrounding areas, especially delivery vehicles and trucks,” she said.

She provided the following safety tips:

  • If you suspect you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or any busy public area.
  • Always be extra vigilant when leaving malls, work, or when heading home late at night or early in the morning.
  • When stopping behind another vehicle, leave enough space in front of your vehicle to make an emergency escape if necessary.
  • When approaching a red traffic light at night, slow down so that you can only reach it when it turns green.
  • Be cautious while on the road – know where you are going beforehand to avoid getting lost in unknown areas.
  • If you have to use a bathroom, stop at a garage/shop where there are other people around, and if you encounter obstacles in the road, do not get out of the car to remove them.

Van der Spuy also urges the community to play an active role in reporting crime and any suspicious behaviour to their local police station.
