Aweh! Find out what’s popping in Durban this weekend

Try something different this weekend.

THIS weekend, there is plenty of fun to be had in Durban. We are not talking about the usual markets and theatre shows – this week, we bring you something different.

A MasterChef-inspired cook-off is sure to spark the foodies’ interest, while the Durban International Film Festival offers movie lovers a wide range of local and international films, and the International Plastic Modellers’ Society puts on an exhibition sure to impress.

Here’s a list of fun events happening this weekend in Durbs and surrounds.

Friday, July 22

Durban’s favourite film festival is back for the 43rd time, taking place from July 21–30. Twenty-twenty-two’s Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is in an exciting hybrid format with all live screenings at the CineCentre Suncoast Casino and others available to view online. The online offering includes almost 200 films from student films, children’s films, shorts, documentaries and features which can be watched from your couch.

Saturday, July 23

The International Plastic Modellers’ Society (IPMS), Durban, will host the annual Modelcon in Westville on Saturday, July 23. The event is a showcase and exhibition of a wide variety of models, dioramas and historical figures built, painted and detailed by modellers and clubs from the whole of KZN. The event, which is free of charge, will showcase several models and dioramas of aircraft, military vehicles, civilian vehicles, waterborne vessels and figures free of charge. This will be at The German Club, 7 Barham Road, Westville, from 09:00.

According to the organiser, demonstrations will be given during the day for people to see some of the basic and intermediate skills and techniques used in building model kits. Vendors will be at the event, selling model kits, tools and accessories needed to get started in a hobby that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family.

Musgrave Methodist Church is hosting a MasterChef-inspired food fair in their church garden on Saturday, July 23 from 11:00.
Teams of competitors will be cooking up a storm with pre-selected ingredients to find the best meal in Musgrave! What’s more, competitors will be cooking al fresco (on braais, Webers, potjies or skottels) and will be preparing a selection of unusual main meals for visitors to enjoy. The family event is a fundraiser for the church’s property and projects.  There will be a Jumping Castle and play area for children – and hotdogs for sale. Portions can be purchased on a ticketing system (R100 adults / R50 children). For more information, or to book your space, contact the church office on 031 201 2005. Cooking starts at 11, and meals are served from noon.
