Consider sponsoring an elderly person at The Elders Voice

The founder The Elders Voice KZN said people always donate to children, pets and other causes, while the elderly are often not even considered.

THE Elders Voice KZN is appealing to individuals and companies to sponsor one of their elderly people for a month or a year.

“It costs about R1 800 per month to feed an elderly person five meals a day, provide shelter and pay utilities, caregivers costs not included. This is a mere R58 a day we have to keep our project/ organisation on the go. Many of our elderly people only get a Sassa pension which is not much more than what they are paying for the above, so we have thought, why not approach individuals and companies and ask them to ‘sponsor an oldie’ for a month or a year.”

“We can issue you with a Section 18A, and you can claim it back, as you are allowed to claim up to 10% of earnings back in tax,” said founder of the non-profit organisation, Jo-ann Herbst.

According to the South African Revenue Service fact sheet, “Donations in cash or in-kind, actually paid or transferred to an S18A-approved organisation, during the year of assessment, provided that the donation does not exceed 10% of the donor’s taxable income, will qualify a person for the deductions.”

Herbst added that people always donate to children, pets and other causes, while the elderly are often not even considered, as they are not seen as an appealing topic or cause.

“Let’s change this – please consider the elderly, and let’s change their lives to allow them some more dignity. Many of them are not fortunate enough to have family – let’s sponsor them. It can all be claimed back,” she said.
