June 10 shutdown: Amanzimtoti residents urged to remain vigilant

While the national shutdown did not happen, residents have been asked to refrain from causing panic by posting unverified information online.

IT was business as usual in Amanzimtoti and across the South Coast on Friday, June 10, after a rumoured national shutdown did not materialise. The shutdown would reportedly have been in response to the high fuel prices.

SAPS, security companies, and community police forums had been on high alert after social media posts by anonymous sources started making the rounds at the beginning of the month, calling for South Africans to stay away from work on June 10. Other posts said all police stations will be invaded and shut down on June 16.

Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum’s public relations officer, Estelle van Eeden, asked residents to refrain from distributing unverified social media posts, information, voice notes and videos as it causes confusion and places strain on resources that are otherwise needed for emergencies.

“We remind citizens to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to SAPS Crime Stop on 10111 and in case of emergencies, dial Metro on 031 361 0000,” said Estelle.
