Toti water outage: councillor provides an update

Technicians are still working night and day to put an end to the water shortages that have plagued Amanzimtoti for three weeks.

REPAIR work on the 375mm trunk main water pipe in Bhekulwandle that supplies the Lewis Drive reservoir continues.

Some parts of Amanzimtoti are concluding a third week of having no water after the pipe burst on May 21. On Wednesday morning, June 9, some residents from certain areas reported that water had started to trickle in.

Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge said the site that the technicians are working in is difficult as it is a 100m x 30m deep hole of clay mud.

“It is extremely deceiving because while the top crust is somewhat dried out by the sun, underneath it’s just sticky clay mud that can have you sink up to your knee. Some of the workers have been on site since Tuesday morning and worked through the night, only sleeping in shifts in a minibus at the top site,” said Beetge.

He added that the delay in completion relates to the fact that ground water contributes to the slush and welders are unable to work with water both inside, accumulated from inflow off the fire hydrants that were used to feed the Fynn node, and the ground water below.

“Technicians are going to continue working until water supply is established to all areas,” he said
