AS Americans commemorate National Donut Day today, June 3, we decided to catch up with the woman who put Durban on the doughnut map with her proudly South African store – Wicked Donuts.
From humble beginnings with her first pop-up shop in 2015, Jeanne Brooks went on to open stores in Durban North, Westville and Morningside.
Berea Mail visited her Florida Road shop this week to find out more about the rise of the Durban donut.

While Brooks offers American-style gourmet doughnuts at her store, she has also given the humble doughnut a Durban make-over with locally inspired flavours like cardamom, banana and coconut. From classic vanilla glaze to contemporary Nutella-filled goodness and proudly Durban barfi, there is something for everyone.
2. A-dough-rable attention to detail
Brooks has created a signature, yeast-made dough recipe.
“We make all our doughnuts with our own homemade recipe, from scratch, and even our glazes are our own recipe. That’s why our doughnuts taste different,” said Brooks.

3. Midnight magic
The Wicked Donuts bakery day begins at midnight where fresh doughnuts are baked and ready to roll at 06:00. Doughnuts are delivered to several stores and supermarkets. This process is done daily – with fresh doughnuts delivered each morning – the sweet treats never stay on the shelf more than one day.
