Ward 97 councillor updates on water and electricity

The municipality is aiming to restore the electricity today, April 21, at 18:00.

WARD 97 councillor, André Beetge, updates the community on the water and electricity situation.

Today, April 21, André Beetge said, “There’s an electricity outage affecting the Winklespruit area, which started on Tuesday evening and although some areas have already been restored, others are still out and this is as a result of infrastructure damage.

Poles have been damaged and cables have been ripped, the Municipality has been working on it but as they fix the one problem, another arises. They are unable to give us an exact time, but at the moment they are working towards today, Thursday, at 18:00, but there’s no guarantee.”

There is also an outage affecting the Lotus Park area, that is of more severity, and the delay is due to the cables that are still submerged in sewerage and water, making it difficult for the department to reach the cables and resolve the problems. They are working towards Friday, April 22, as a completion date.

Beetge and his team have not yet gotten around to visiting the Umlazi side, but he said they were told a task team are busy with the new line.

“We have a water distribution situation all over Toti. The Municipality is indeed closing some valves which allows water to other areas that didn’t have before. Umgeni Water confirmed that they are still on full capacity, but the Municipality is redistributing to see if they can get more water to more people, taking the pressure off the tankers,” said Beetge.

The tanker, which has 16 000 litres of water, will be moving to Athlone Park, where residents have not had water for 12 days, then towards the centre of Toti.

“I’m riding in the tanker and will not let it leave until the last drop of water is out. This water will go into Amanzimtoti today,” he said.
