De Jager was murdered at her Amanzimtoti home in October 2021 and no arrests have been made. An official police statement released after the murder revealed that the body of the married mother of two young daughters was found by her husband, Werner, in the yard after she returned from an early morning jog. Her handbag, cellphone, and gate keys were found next to the body, and she had marks on her neck that suggested she could have been strangled.

Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, said the investigation is being conducted in cooperation with SAPS’s Forensic Investigative Psychology Unit.

“A team spent a week at the crime scene interviewing witnesses, working closely with the investigation team gathering statements, CCTV footage, etc. Their detailed report along with DNA results will form part of the docket. The investigating officer is confident that they will soon have a breakthrough that should enable them to present the case to the Department of Justice,” said Van der Spuy.

A week after his wife’s funeral, Werner de Jager was reported as a missing person by his father-in-law, Henk van Zyl after failing to get hold of him. He was found a few days later by a farmer in an Illovo sugarcane plantation disoriented with two jerrycans of petrol next to his car.

At the end of February, Van der Spuy confirmed that a case of theft was opened and was under investigation after a bicycle was stolen from the De Jager home.
