This comes after some residents complained that forbidding people to read newspapers while allowing them to read books made no sense. Thabo Afrika of Kingsburgh West said even after Covid-19 regulations were relaxed, libraries continued being strict.

“I visit the Kingsburgh Library in Warner Beach regularly and being prevented from accessing newspapers has been such an inconvenience. Not all of us can afford to buy newspapers every day, so we rely on libraries,” he said.

eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said the reading of newspapers at libraries was suspended in a bid to minimise the spread of Covid-19.

“As the restrictions have been relaxed and further relaxation proposed by the government, we are resuming with full services including the reading of newspapers. We, therefore, plead with our patrons to please continue with observing the remaining protocols to try and minimise the sudden increase of infections by sanitising their hands and keeping their masks on at all times while in enclosed environments,” said Msawakhe.
