They recently held a clean sweep at the Umbogintwini Beach and Rivermouth, in an on-going attempt to combat plastic pollution.

A team of four Clean Surf Project members managed to collect a total of 143.20kg of recyclable and general waste to rid the area from plastic products, broken glass, nappies, candles, medical products and many other items that one would not expect to find on the coastline.

“The incorrect disposal of once-off face masks has sadly become a great concern as more and more masks are being found on the beach, in waterways, green spaces, roads and pathways.

Masks found during a clean sweep.

While the material can take hundreds of years to break down, masks can threaten to entangle wildlife, litter our beaches, block sewers and pollute the food chain,” said Clean Surf Project founder, Denzil van der Westhuizen.

“We invite community members, schools, businesses and/or other organisations to participate, as the clean up campaign will be in celebration of Global Recycling Day (March, 18) as well as World Water Day (March, 22),” said Van der Westhuizen.

Bring along gloves, shoes, water and sunscreen. Due to a shortage of refuse bags for the municipal day-to-day beach cleansing operations along the coastline, they welcome any support to assist with the supply or sponsorship thereof.
