Ward 97 committee elections to be held this Sunday

The elections will proceed once a 100 person quorum is reached.

ETHEKWINI ward 97 residents are reminded that ward committee elections will take place on Sunday, March 13, at the circus site on Civic Road in Amanzimtoti.

Registration and verification against the IEC voters roll will be conducted from 08:00 to 09:30, and barcoded SA identity document, ID card, or valid temporary ID would be necessary for this purpose.

The following people can be nominated and voted onto the committee, the lifespan of which aligns with the local government term of office:

• A registered voter (18 years or older) whose name appears on the voters roll segment of the ward

• Is in possession of basic skills, including reading and writing for ease of participation in municipal processes

• Is elected by his/her interest group located in the ward or nominated by any member of the community to serve on the committee

• Is not indebted to the municipality for a period longer than three (3) months, unless he/she can prove that arrangements for the settlement of the account has been made and remain in good standing for the duration of the term of office

• Is not an employee of the municipality

• Is not a community development worker, community care giver or appointed by any national, provincial or local government (municipal) structure in any other capacity.

Those elected would be expected to champion the following portfolios that align with the municipal standing committees:

1. Cleansing and Solid Waste

2. Electricity, Water and Sanitation

3. Entrepreneurship and Small Business

4. Health, Safety and Security

5. Human Settlements

6. Skills Development Job Creation

7. Sports, Recreation and Culture

8. Transport, Roads and Stormwater

9.Youth, Gender and Vulnerable Groups

10. Secretary

In terms of the program and accepting that the 100 person quorum is reached by 09:30, the exercise should draw to a close before 14:00. Enquiries can be directed to councillor Andre Beetge on 082 718 8137.
