Amanzimtoti Library remains closed

During a visit to the library, it was clear that the building is in various stages of disrepair

THE re-opening of the Amanzimtoti Library, which serves as a source of education, entertainment and information for many in the community, remains unknown.

In an article titled “Amanzimtoti Library closed for renovations” (March 30, 2021), an inspection by the Fire Department declared the roof “unstable and unsafe”.

This comes after an article published in December, 2020, titled “Amanzimtoti Library temporarily closed”, being one of eight libraries at the time to close for renovations.

This was according to municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, who said it was “due to circumstances that are beyond the city’s control”.

During a visit to the library, it was clear that the building is in various stages of disrepair. There is long grass sprouting out the gutters and the roof is still not repaired.

There are still questions surrounding the state of the books after the roof collapsed almost a year ago. Residents also want to know when the library is expected to re-open to the public.

There is a small section open for copy, printing and internet facilities, but no access to books. According to ward 97 councillor, André Beetge , the library is by no means a cheap or quick project as the entire roof structure both in and out has to be replaced and the library itself needs to be renovated.

“We have been in communication with the head of libraries who confirmed observations of a team from Capital Projects that was on site a few weeks ago. We very much doubt that this will receive any attention in the current financial year,” said Beetge.

In the meantime, residents are urged to use the Kingsburgh, Athlone Park or Galleria libraries until Amanzimtoti is functional again. Despite several emails to eThekwini Municipality, there was no response at the time of going to press.
