Amanzimtoti Bowling Club sisters battle it out on the greens

Lesley Levy emerged victorious in a nail biting finale of the PNB women’s novice singles championship.

WE’VE been reporting on the progress of sisters Lesley Levy and Hilary Lindsay in the Port Natal (PNB) women’s novice singles since the beginning of the year. The pair had previously won silver in the 2021 PNB novice pairs together.

Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) was thrilled when both won their semi-final singles games and went on to play each other in the finals. It’s rare for two members of the same club to play off in a final.

A lot of members turned up at Durban Bowling Club to support a game that turned out to be hotter than the weather. It looked like Hilary was going to win with a strong early lead, but Lesley was not going to give up, and clawed her way up the score board to deny her younger sister the trophy.

As soon as one competition finished, another started – the first stage of the Port Natal men and women’s trips. ABC entered five men and seven women’s teams.

Well done to all who played through the intense heat and congratulations to the teams who won their round-robin sections and are through to the playoffs. The two men’s teams through are Greg McLeod, Brian Masters and Barry Bush; and Glen Scorgie, Ian Mills and Trevor Osborne.

The three women’s teams through are Elmarie Young, Cathy Badenhorst and Marilyn Thiart; Nicky Stirzaker, Heather Cooper and Jackie Holdrick; and the team of novices Jaylene Fagan, Karen Glover and Zeldine Viljoen who won all three of their games.

The weather finally held up for the second round of the Hypersure mixed trips that had been delayed due to the heavy rain of the past couple of weeks. Still leading the field of 20 teams are Greg McLeod and the Stirzakers – Nicky and Alec, followed by Adie Fuller’s team with Phil Whitton and Amanda Ninow.

At TGIF, the 100 board was won by Heather Brown, but Carlos Baeta was not present to win the attendance draw and Mike Groom did not win the key draw, so the prizes go up to R250 and R3 915 respectively with 30 keys to choose from.

Birthday greetings for the week go to Archie Walker and Fred Welch.
