Recently, a team of four Clean Surf staff members collected a staggering 188.50kg of plastic and general waste. “It’s simply incredible to see the wide array of products getting washed onto the river embankment and shoreline.

This included household items such as nappies, plastic products, medical test kits, shoes and slops, knives and car parts, the list is endless,” said Clean Surf Project and Sapphire Coast Tourism spokesperson, Romy Wenzel.

Clean Surf Project expressed its gratitude to community members, educational institutions and businesses that have supported their clean-up campaigns and educational programmes to date.

“We appeal to the public, schools, community groups as well as businesses to support upcoming events to join the fight against marine plastic pollution as many hands make light work,” said Van der Westhuizen.

The next community clean up is on Saturday, February 19 at Umbogintwini Beach from 09:00 to 11:00.

Take along gloves, water, hat, shoes and sunscreen. Bin bags will be supplied. Parking is available at the Amanzimtoti Country Club, 1 Golf Course Road, Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti.

In addition, the non-profit organisation is looking for sponsors to assist with the supply of refuse bags as well as bulk bags which are being used to separate and sort recyclable material.
