Man drowns during baptism in Isipingo

Emergency services were alerted and quickly responded.

THE police have opened an inquest docket has been opened after a 57-year-old man drowned at Isipingo Beach on Saturday, February 5, during a baptism ceremony.

The incident happened near the beach’s tidal pool and came after eThekwini Municipality had issued a notification on the closure of all beaches from Thursday, February 3, after shark nets were removed as a result of bad weather. All beach use and bathing had been forbidden.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said the circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.
