On January 15, a 35-year-old man was shot dead in an Amanzimtoti supermarket after a car chase that had started on Andrew Zondo Road. The man had run into the store on foot in an attempt to escape from his pursuers after ditching his bullet-riddled car.

While the police did not confirm whether the shooting was a taxi-related hit, it is widely known that the victim came from a prominent taxi-owning family. According to a source that has ties to the taxi industry, the KwaMakhutha shooting was a swift retaliation to his death.

At the time of the shooting, provincial SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said a group of about 10 men was sitting outside enjoying drinks when an unknown car approached. Its occupants alighted and opened fire directed at the group. The victims were rushed to a local clinic where three of them were pronounced dead, while the other seven were stabilised and transferred to RK Khan Hospital. The fourth victim died in hospital. Most of the victims were related and were from Mid-Illovo and Umkomaas.

At the time of going to press, the SAPS spokesperson had not confirmed whether the police investigation had revealed a link to the shootings.
