Mayor visits City’s multi-million rand projects

These projects are earmarked to create thousands of jobs, boost the municipality’s rates base and transform the local spatial footprint.

DURBAN’S up and coming flagship development projects, undertaken in partnership with private sector investors and developers, are worth millions of rands, the eThekwini Municipality said in a press release this week.

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda together with newly elected councillors embarked on an oversight visit to these developments on Thursday, February 3.  

The Rivertown Precinct, Durban Film City, Iconic Tower sites, Ntshongweni, Hammarsdale, Keystone and Midway Crossing developments, Brickworks, Sibaya, and the Oceans in uMhlanga were visited.  

The investment value of these catalytic projects exceeds R500 million and will aid in boosting the local economy and job creation. The Keystone Development has created over 10 000 jobs, with the majority of locals being employed.  

“The oversight visit aimed to ensure that we expedite development processes to ensure these projects are completed on time. This visit also sought to engage with developers on how locals can benefit from these projects,” said Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.  

He said Durban was open for business and it was important to create a conducive environment for investors.  

“This focus on investment, construction, and infrastructure development are in keeping with national government’s focus on infrastructure and investment development in the 2021 State of the Nation and Budget Speech addresses. It is seen as a key driver of economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, ” he added.
