WITH more than seven decades under its belt, the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (Saambr) is one of the oldest marine science institutions in South Africa.
Spokesperson for the organisation, Ann Kunz said Saambr celebrated its 71st year of conservation and research on Monday, January 31.
“As Saambr enters its 71st year, we do so with a new appreciation of our organisation, which has stood the test of time,” she said.

“We have survived so much, including the Covid-19 pandemic. We look forward to the next 71 years with excitement and the confidence that we will continue to remain true to our mission of ‘Helping people to care for the ocean’,” continued Kunz.
She said Covid-19 protocols foiled plans to host a 70th birthday celebration.

The organisation planned to invite more than 500 guests, including past Saambr staff members, from all corners of the globe.
“It was a good year in many ways and, although we didn’t have the planned celebrations, we celebrated the small things that we often take for granted, such as staff returning to work, and laughter in the corridors of Saambr, as well as the health of our team and our animals,” said Kunz.
