WITH thousands of people visiting the city of Durban for the holidays, the eThekwini mayor, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda has appealed to the public to adhere to all safety regulations to ensure an incident-free festive season.
Kaunda’s call follows the drowning of three people at various City beaches.
“Circumstances surrounding the drownings are being investigated. However, all three were discovered outside of designated bathing times and non-bathing beaches,” he stated.
The mayor said law enforcement, together with various municipal departments, are out in full force to ensure the safety of the public.

“We appeal to the residents and to our visitors to cooperate with the police, municipal staff and lifeguards to ensure their safety,” he said.
He also urged the public to only swim in designated beaches.
“Swimming while under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited,” said the mayor.
He encouraged parents to ensure that their children are tagged with wristbands, which contain their contact details, to ensure they can be easily re-united, should they become separated.

“The city’s traffic management plan will ensure the smooth flow of traffic and efficient access control during the festive period, particularly in areas that are prone to congestion. Law enforcement is taking a zero-tolerance approach to drinking and driving and to public drinking. Vehicles will be searched for alcohol in beach areas
“Law enforcement will also strictly enforce observance of the curfew. No persons are allowed to sleep overnight in public areas, buses, taxis and cars,” said Kaunda.
He added that the City’s safety measures are in place to ensure that everyone enjoys the festive season while staying safe.
“They are not meant to dampen the festive spirit, so we appeal to the public to cooperate with all our law enforcing agencies and other staff,” said Kaunda.
