In 2019, Nombuso Shandu, 17, started Nalisu Foundation, which is named after her nephew who died in the same year. Nombuso said the foundation’s primary focus is to help and support other NPOs that help the community by fundraising and offering assistance to meet some of their operational needs.

“I started this NPO as a means of bringing about positive change in the community, especially when it comes to struggles faced by the youth. We aim to help young people between the ages of 13 and 25 realise that it is alright to dream and to be ambitious,” she said.

On Friday the foundation will partner with Seed of Hope (SoH) to host an event called Nalisu Youth Connect at the SoH Community Development Centre in 701 Reeves Road at Bhekulwandle. Some of the topics addressed on the day will be spirituality, identity, and sexuality.

“There will be activities that are aimed at building the youth’s selfesteem, self-reliance and vision. We will also play games, take questions from young people and talk about anything that affects them.”

Nombuso has achieved a lot this year such as starting a cleaning business, while also dedicating herself to her school work.
