#50YearsAgo From the start of our journey

The SUN's office was once home to many families.

LONG before the SUN moved into 33 Main Road, Doonside, the premises was a loving home to various families, who shared their memories in reaction to a Facebook post from the SUN. Pat Becker said she remembers that the house once belonged to a Mr and Mrs Shaw when she was just a little girl. Heather Symons said they lived in the house in 1960s. Her grandfather, a Scotsman named James Brown, owned a veggie shop right next to the then Post Office and there was a chemist next door as well. “We moved there from Queen’s Terrace 62 years ago. We have lovely memories of our time there. We spent many great days in that house.”

Heather’s message jogged a memory in Phyllis Taylor, saying her mother worked in the veggie shop for Heather’s grandfather. According to Lydia Rodseth Hylkema, her husband, Roald, lived there in the mid-60s with his parents, Nils and Lettie Rodseth, and Jane Collins said a recruitment company, where she worked, used it as an office many moons ago.

Unfortunately, the SUN was unable to get more information from Lydia Rodseth Hylkema, but managed to get more information from previous staff members. According to Heather Butler, former managing editor, the SUN’s office was first located in the Lagoon Centre, but because there was always a parking issue for staff , they moved to 33 Main Road in early 1994, which was seen as a good move. Debbie Vosloo, who was the sales manager at the time, said John Miller, the then editor of the SUN, procured the purchase of the house. It was then when Caxton bought the house, which became home to the staff of the South Coast SUN. John left Caxton to pursue other avenues, before the move.”   DID YOU KNOW?
