#50YearsAgo Amanzimtoti High School opens

Penny Heyns has the habit of standing with her hands on her hips after the first whistle, while other competitors bend over in the starting position.

THE original buildings of Amanzimtoti High School were officially opened in April 1953, as Kingsway High School.

In 1962, the hall was added and in 1977, Amanzimtoti came into being under Mr Tony Larkin. He was principal until his retirement in December, 1985. Mr Noel Peinke, took up the appointment in August, 1998.

Since past pupil, Penny Heyns’ double swimming gold at the 1996 Olympics, the school has named its pool in her honour.

She grew up in Amanzimtoti. She started her swimming career at home, where her mother, Patsy taught her the swimming stroke that would change her life.

Penny proved an all-round athlete as a child and earned distinctions in all her ballet exams.
