#50YearsAgo Kingsburgh flats for aged get green light

The Social Centre has become a part of the lives of many senior citizens in this Borough.

29 JANUARY 1971

KWOFTA – the Kingsburgh Welfare Organisation for the Aged – has received the green light from the Department of Social Welfare to go ahead with the building of their proposed flats for senior citizens in Kingsburgh.

Twenty-five double units and 45 single units are planned on a half-acre site at 6 Sutton Lane, on which KWOFTA has an option. It is hoped that building will start this year.

The news that the department has approved the project – which means it can be built with a low cost government loan – was announced at the organisation’s annual meeting this week.

At the meeting the chairman Mr Morris Robinson, and the secretary, Mrs Joan du Plooy, were highly praised for their work during the past year, as was the land subcommittee – Mrs M. Mott, Mrs E. Crocker and the secretary.

KWOFTA’s incoming committee is: Mesdames Du Plooy, Norman, Mott, Pilley, Brown, Patterson, Roberts and Greyling and Messrs, Robinson, Shuttleworth, Walden, Brown, Pilley, Barnardt, and Clerico.

WORTHWHILE INSTITUTION

The following are extracts from the annual report given by Mrs Du Plooy in the absence of the chairman.

“We have raised over R1 200 through our various fund raising eff orts such as cake sales, film shows, Mrs Harrison’s concert, street collection, bridge drives, Illovo Beach Development Association’s concert, Ward 3 Resident and Ratepayers Association stall at our fête, and of course the fête held by the Social Centre to raise funds for KWOFTA.

“We have also received donations in memory of various people. It is not just a weekly tea party, it is a very worthwhile institution.

“A number of seniors have been found accommodation, hampers of necessities have been supplied to people in need and many seniors have received help in solving a variety of problems.

“Ambulance fees have been paid in a number of cases and seniors have been transported to and from hospital by committee members in their own cars.

“We have an option on a piece of land, ½ acre in extent, at No. 6 Sutton Lane, zoned G.R.1. We have been successful in our Special Consent application to council to build our block of flats on this site.

“We can now go ahead full steam. TAFTA have informed us that if for some reason KWOFTA could no longer administer our block of flats, they would be prepared to do so. This would put our Council’s mind at rest on this score.”
