#50YearsAgo Toti Lions Club wins efficiency cup

It would appear that “Sleepy Natal” is not so sleepy after all.

THE District and Multiple District Conventions of Lions International were held in Durban last week. The Lions Club of Amanzimtoti was represented by Lions
Norval Gibson, Dennis Kenward, Carl Arenz, Barry Rosenberg, Bert Tunmer and Gerald Smith.

Lion Bob Brown addressed the District Convention on matters pertaining to insurance.

Concurrent with the Lions Convention the Lady Lions held their convention. The following ladies representing Amanzimtoti:- Mesdames Gibson, Kenward, Arenz,
Rosenberg, Tunmer, Smith and Knox.

A most interesting programme was arranged for the ladies including a talk on Zulu customs and bead work, a talk about the Indian section of our community, their way of life and the Sari, its history and method of application. Finally tours were arranged to the sugar terminal and Indian Market.

INAUGURAL BANQUET

The inaugural banquet was held in the Durban City Hall and attended by the deputy Mayor of Durban, Lion Ron Williams, and other dignitaries. It was a special pleasure to have International Director Lloyd Morgan and his wife attend the banquet and subsequently every Convention event.

Lion Lloyd hails from New Zealand. A feature of the evening as far as the banquet was concerned was the sponteneous singing of Now Is The Hour by Nella Kenward in honour of the visitors from New Zealand.

During Convention the District Efficiency Cup was awarded to the Amanzimtoti Club for their efforts during the past year, closely followed by the Lions Club of Port Shepstone, Margate and Durban South.

The district concerned includes Natal, a large part of the Cape extending as far as Mossel Bay and part of the Free State.
