Seed of Hope launches book club

Simunye plans to inspire children from the Bhekulwandle community to develop a love of reading through the book club.

It is said that there are many ways to enlarge your world, but the love of books is the best of all.  This quote perfectly encompasses the purpose behind the Simunye Book Club. The club was officially launched recently as part of Seed of Hope’s (SoH) after-school programme. Simunye plans to inspire children from the Bhekulwandle community to develop a love of reading through the book club.

“It was an honour for us to introduce the project to the Simunye parents. They also had the opportunity to see their children perform and read aloud,” said Nozipho Dhlamini, the child and youth development manager at SoH.

The main sponsor behind the project, Not Just For Book Worms Book Club, got to meet the beneficiaries and little ones it impacted.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to them for raising R10 000 and partnering with Sapref who donated R7 000 in books and R3 000 Makro shopping voucher.”

This passion for books and reading was inspired by the first annual book week which was held in October last year with superheroes and secret strengths as the theme. The learners made their own costumes based on the stories they had read.

“The Simunye learners really enjoyed book week and we had a number of them enter the poetry and storytelling competition that we hosted. The children’s response gave birth to the idea of starting a book club. I truly believe that literature and reading are what we need to set the next generation apart.”
