Toti legal expert passes on

On completion of school, Denis studied law and obtained his BA. LLB through Howard College at the then University of Natal in Durban.

A LONG serving South Coast attorney, Denis Maynard Meumann, has passed away at the age of 88. He died peacefully on September 25, after a brave battle with ill health. Denis was born on July 21, 1933, in the flat above his father Cyril’s chemist shop at 179 Kingsway in Warner Beach.

He and his brother, Ronald, regarded the beach and sea as their playground where they spent much of their childhood fishing and swimming. Denis attended Warner Beach Primary School and Anglican Church Sunday school. For high school, he went to Maritzburg College as a boarder.

On completion of school he studied law and obtained his BA. LLB through Howard College at the then University of Natal in Durban. After completing his studies, Denis caught a Union Castle Line ship to London in 1958, spending a year in traveling in Europe with a group of friends.

On returning home, he joined AD Millar & Kimber which had a branch in Amanzimtoti, and Denis took over as legal advisor to the Borough of Amanzimtoti. In 1961 he went on holiday to the Drakensberg and at Cathedral Peak met his future wife Nita Carroll, whom he married in December 1961. They went on to have three children, James, Mark and Helen.

Denis served as a sideman on the church council of St. Paul’s in Durban for many years. In 1970, he and Rob White founded the legal firm Meumann and White. He continued as as a legal advisor to the Amanzimtoti council until well into the 1980s.

Denis loved to travel, listen to classical music and opera. His sporting interests were golf and tennis. He was a real gentleman, and his values of honesty, integrity and loyalty continue with his children. He officially retired in 2000 and with his wife, he was blessed with being able to visit their children and grandchildren overseas for many years. He and Nita relocated back to Warner Beach from Durban North in 2011. He is dearly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
