Boy burns family home for drug money

The fire damaged a bedroom before it was extinguished.

A 14-year-old boy from Folweni was assaulted by neighbours after he allegedly burnt his mother’s house after she would not give him money to buy his favourate drug recently.

The Grade 8 learner, who can not be named as he is underage, is allegedly addicted to codeine, which is a drug found in prescription strength cough mixture. According to a news report, the fire damaged a bedroom before it was extinguished. The boy’s mother said she is hurt by his son’s addiction but was not aware it had gone to that extent.

“This incident has made us to live in fear because we no longer know what type of life this child is living. Maybe he has problems that he is not telling us,” said the mother, who also can not be identified to protect the minor’s identity.

After the fire was put out, neighbours got hold of the boy and whipped him. No case was opened with the police.
