CCPO nabs suspects and recovers stolen property

Several crimes have occurred over the past weeks in Amanzimtoti and surrounding areas.

The theft of cables and light fitting reared its ugly head at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre recently.  Cables were stolen from the municipal substation behind the soccer club.

“On Wednesday, September 22, the power went off in the CCPO office at the sports centre, so immediately CCPO supervisor Isaac Dindi and crewman Muzi Shezi, responded to the substation where two suspects were caught still inside. They were handed over to Amanzimtoti SAPS and eThekwini cable theft unit. A small bit of stolen cable affected the rugby club, soccer club, cycling club and CCPO office,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

A stolen vehicle was recovered in Amanzimtoti after being spotted by members of CCPO.  On Wednesday, September 15, information was circulated via the CCPO radio network regarding a Kia Rio suspected of being stolen in Katlehong.

“The vehicle was promptly located with occupants in Rosslyn Road, by CCPO supervisor Logan Naidoo, who called for assistance, which lead to prompt response of Blue Security, ET Rapid Response and SAPS Integrated Vehicle Task Team. The vehicle was inspected by members, which was positively established as sought, and the driver was interviewed and then detained accordingly for further investigative purposes.”

On Friday, September 17, while travelling on Adams Road, CCPO supervisor Naidoo and his crew Siyabonga, noticed a man carrying bags. The suspect dropped the bags and fled towards Old Main Road as soon as he saw the CCPO bakkie. The items recovered in the bag have been handed over to Amanzimtoti SAPS. Camping chairs were also recovered by CCPO foot patrollers in Wytham Harvey Road.

“They spotted a suspect carrying the chairs. The suspect dropped the two chairs and fled with a third chair. The chairs have been handed in at Amanzimtoti SAPS.”

After Snodey noticed thick black smoke emerging out of a bush near the Amanzimtoti CBD, he waited for the suspect to come out of the bush.

“As the smoke stopped the suspect ran in the bush. Once he emerged with a bag in his hand, we let him walk into an area where he was easier to apprehend. CCPO, ET Rapid and Blue members closed in on him, and before he could flee, he was cornered. The copper cable appeared to belong to eThekweni Municipality and it was notified and came to investigate. The suspect’s identification was forwarded to Amanzimtoti SAPS Criminal Investigation Department to be profiled. It soon emerged that the suspect was wanted for a theft case in Dickens Road, Athlone Park around June.”

The suspect was arrested and taken to Amanzimtoti SAPS Criminal Investigation Department. The municipality will add charges once the cable is positively identified.
