Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare strengthens family bonds

Apart from food insecurity, there has been an increase in the need for psychosocial support for families and their members.

There have been several challenges from Covid-19 to the recent riots, which have massive psychological effects on family dynamics.  From stress, anxiety, loss of employment, gender-based violence and food insecurity, the family structure has been rocked to the core. This is according to the chairperson of the Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare, Iris Canham.

“During the riots, we saw a huge increase in the need for food aid and emergency relief during the period and two weeks after the riots. We were deeply grateful to have partnered with a Johannesburg-based NPO, Make a Difference SA, that helped us meet the immediate needs of people in our community and the outskirts thereof. A special thank you to AECI for the food hampers distributed to 30 families and for the continuous support.”

Apart from food insecurity, there has been an increase in the need for psychosocial support for families and their members.

“The riots have exposed us all to what seemed like a nightmare so we can imagine how children are deeply affected and how they are trying to process all that has happened over this period. We at the society are trying our best to step up, reach out and implement support sessions to help people cope. The society is increasing its base and will be providing more school programmes in the third and fourth term.”

Wednesdays are dedicated to mental health and wellness if people would like to connect with others. All activities whether in schools or mental health sessions provide very practical ways to help people cope and take some methods home or in the classroom to make a difference to those around us. The society’s calendar for the remainder of August is as follows: Women’s Wellness morning with yoga and drumming on Wednesday, August 25. Individual, couples and family counselling is available from Monday to Friday by appointment.
