Help save our river in Amanzimtoti [LETTER]

Reports to the municipality go unheeded and are closed off with no action taken.

EDITOR – And a sewer ran through it, is this how people will remember Amanzimtoti when they see the state of our once iconic river?

I wonder what King Shaka would say if he were to drink from the river today? He certainly would not comment on its sweetness, because our river is dying, being poisoned slowly but surely by the sewage that is leaking into it daily.

Sewage is flowing into the river from several different sources. This is also causing erosion of the river bank, yet no one seems to care. Reports to the municipality go unheeded and are closed off with no action taken.

Meanwhile, people continue to wash their cars at the drift and children play in the water.

The polluted water then flows into the sea where it causes further pollution to fish and bathers.

So what is to be done? This is our iconic river, named by the prestigious Shaka himself, from which our little town takes its name.

Does nobody care? The municipality certainly doesn’t. Do you care? Do you care what happens to our river?

All the walkers, bikers, bird watchers walking along the river every day, do you not see the pollution, smell the sewage, shake your head at the litter lying around and hanging from the trees?

If you care, join me in reporting the issue to the municipality on 080 131 3013.

Let them know that we do care and something needs to be done about this.
