Winklespruit Bowling Club see a clash of the giants

Another clash of the giants also took place when Jeff van Belkum’s side took on Ivan van den Bergh’s team in the nominated men's trips.

Winklespruit Bowling Club’s (WBC) men’s and women’s competition secretary’s made a big push in organising a large number of club competition games in the past week.

There were six rinks in use on Wednesday morning, from the women’s pairs to the men’s trips competition and it was obvious that some very competitive games took place.

One in particular stood out, the women’s senior singles game between Sylveigh Ananiadis and the reigning champion Lorna Sourgen. It was Lorna who got out of the blocks first and took a large lead as Sylveigh struggled somewhat to find her length but it was only a temporary lapse and she fought back by playing some telling shots to push Lorna all the way. In the end Lorna moved out in front again and went on to win the game.

Both women played some very accurate drawing shots throughout the game and it was a pity that one of them had to loose, well done to both of them for putting on a wonderful display of bowls.

Another clash of the giants also took place when Jeff van Belkum’s side took on Ivan van den Bergh’s team in the nominated men’s trips. Jeff’s team went off in a rush and soon found themselves with a commanding lead.

Ivan’s team did not fold and fought back to find themselves holding two shots on the last end to draw level, but then Jeff still had the last wood and played a marvelous strike to get the second shot and win the game.

Credit go to both players for a superb game of bowls.

Competition results:
In the women’s championship singles Estelle van der Merwe beat Margaret van Belkum and in the women’s senior championship singles Lorna Sourgen beat Sylveigh Ananiadis.

In the drawn 2-4-2 mixed pairs Freddy Hetterscheidt and Lou Lou Bingham beat Basil Ananiadis and Annalie Pienaar.

In the men’s championship singles Mike Kruger beat Paul Hedly and in the men’s championship senior singles Eddie Bingham beat Neville Roscoe.

In the men’s nominated pairs Hans de Waal and Wessie van der Westhuizen beat Mike Kruger and André Gelderblom and John Scot and Keith Holmes beat Jeff van Belkum and Steve Liebetrau.

In the men’s nominated trips Jeff van Belkum, Barrie de Wee and Steve Liebetrau beat Ivan van den Berg, Paul Hedly and Alan Duncan.

The club hosted members of the local Moths Old Bill Shell Hole to a morning of fun bowls on Sunday, 20 June, and a marvelous time was had by all who participated.

After the bowls the players moved to the Moth Clubhouse for the prize giving followed by a braai.

Upcoming events include the Port Natal men’s and women’s league carded for Saturday, 26 June. Check the notice board for team news and venues or contact your team captain.

Thursday, 1 July, sees the women’s Winkle trips taking place, registration at 08:30 for 09:00. Social bowls takes place every Wednesday and Friday, tabs in at 13:30 for 14:00.

Note there will be a bring and braai on Friday, 25 June, after social bowls.
