Revved up for Youth Month

The Durban motorcycle community has pledged support to raise awareness on drug addiction and other related issues with specific focus on the youth.

Get ready to rev your engines for a good cause.  “We want you to join us in a drug addiction awareness initiative.” This is the call from ward 97 Councillor André Beetge and Megaforce Motorcycle club senior road captain, Marius Conradie.  Following a call by former Amanzimtoti resident, Sue-Lee Henning of Tangled Thoughts, the Durban motorcycle community has pledged support to raise awareness on drug addiction and other related issues with specific focus on the youth. In honour of Youth Month, the programme will start with a prayer at Pipeline Beach parking area at 9.30am on Saturday, 26 June followed by a burn out. Cllr André explained that if you don’t know what that is, be sure to come and find out.

“Formalities that include the sale of cloth badges at R50 (fundraiser towards the activities of Tangled Thoughts) should be concluded by 10am where after a short (but extremely loud) mass ride will be conducted in coordination with Metro police down Beach Road towards the Lagoon parking area next L’escalier Flats.”

The group will then split up with a portion backtracking to stop off at pubs along Beach Road while another will go towards Warner Beach. A delegation consisting of public representatives, SAPS, Metro Police, Community Police Forum and Bikers Against Drugs will request representatives of establishments to sign a commitment to adhere to Covid-19 protocols, eliminate the sale of alcohol to minors and vigorously root out any drug use, sales and substance abuse on their premises.

“As participants will remain outside while only the delegation will enter the different establishments, road users are requested to exercise patience and caution in the interest of the bigger cause. Groups will reconnect at the Illovo picnic site next to the river where a mass ride will be undertaken along the old road (R102) ending at Cattle and Barrel in Umkomaas where lunch, refreshments and good company can be enjoyed at own expense.  Those wishing to continue further south will remain subject to the discipline, instructions and directions of marshalls, road captains and Metro police and can break away from the ride at the entrance into Umkomaas.

“Although participation is open to the general public, indeed encouraged and welcomed, all will remain subject to strict discipline and no speedsters or individuals overtaking or riding out ahead of the mass ride will be tolerated.” Pledges and donations can be channelled through www.tangledthoughts.co.za.”
