Amanzimtoti man needs assistance

According to Felicia sometimes Darius is so weak he has to be pushed in a wheelchair but most of the time he is bedridden.

Darius Geel, 38, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) last year and his life took a drastic turn. MS is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves. Darius was a young healthy man who loved being active and in a blink of an eye his life changed.

“He will never be able to work again because not only has his legs failed him but his hands and arms are starting to slowly but surely give him problems where he can’t even hold a glass without his hands shaking. He eats with food on his chest while lying down because it’s almost impossible to get his body upright.  The really big and stressful thing right now is keeping a roof over our heads, and although I am trying to do some work from home, it’s earned me nothing thus far and I am mainly kept busy with Darius more and more every day.  I just feel helpless and please find it in your hearts to help us,” said his fiancé, Felicia Alberts.

Due to the effects of MS he is unable to walk without crutches. According to Felicia sometimes Darius is so weak he has to be pushed in a wheelchair but most of the time he is bedridden.

“Darius was retrenched at the end of January, rather than being medically boarded. Had he been medically boarded he would have received a portion of his salary until he is 60 and he would still be on medical aid. He is no longer on the medical aid and no medical aid will accept him with his condition.   At this stage, the community has been awesome helping with food parcels but rental is a problem and there just aren’t any cheaper places around here.”

The pair appeals for any assistance to help them make ends meet.

“I am working hard to get a job, but working from home would be best as Darius can not be left alone. The most amazing thing about Darius is that he lets nothing get to him. Although he misses being able to do normal things, he makes people around him appreciate what they are able to do. The most amazing thing about Darius is his positivity and attitude and he has the most contagious laugh.”
