Excellent rugby on display at Amanzimtoti

Further pre-season fixtures include an away game against against Varsity College on Saturday, 29 May.

Amanzimtoti Rugby Club hosted Hillcrest on Saturday, 8 May South Coast Warriors from Port Shepstone on Friday, 14 May. These were the first club rugby games played following the restrictions of the Covid-19 lockdown.

“The pre-season games played so far saw teams competing in a series of unstructured chukkas of 20 minutes each. This format allowed the games to be used for trials which were unavoidably postponed in April. Amanzimtoti had the privilege of hosting several new players (some from outside the province) hoping to secure positions within the Club for the new season,” said marketing manager of the club, Rowan Price.

The day was a fruitful exercise for the coaching staff as they witnessed some great individual play.
Many of the visiting young men enjoyed the club experience so much that they indicated that they would like to come back and play for Amanzimtoti once the League kicks off later in the year.

“The Warriors offered a different challenge to Hillcrest in that they were more forwards orientated. They had massive and experienced forwards that tested our younger side from the beginning. Our scrums were better managed than in the Hillcrest game and our general play and attack were much better. We do however have a lot of work to do over the next two weeks in preparation for the first league game on 5 June”, says Mark Cameron, the Director of Rugby for Amanzimtoti.

Further pre-season fixtures include an away game against against Varsity College on Saturday, 29 May.
