Clean sweep for Amanzimtoti SAPS

Zane Galloway asks other residents to come on board to support the clean-up.

Local resident, Zane Galloway, hopes to give back to the community while beautifying Amanzimtoti police station.
He took it upon himself to clean-up the area after noticing that trees and grass in the area have become overgrown. The passionate resident has committed himself to cleaning up the area. He plans to conduct the initiative every Saturday, weather dependent, until the area is in pristine condition. He asks other residents to come on board to support the clean-up.

“I have always been someone who is neutral in the community and I believed that it was time for me to start giving back and lending a helping hand. I wanted to start contributing to the community that I live in. I thought that the police station was a good place to start. I noticed that the gardens needed some work to be done. A police station is one of the major landmarks of a town. It should be a town’s pride and I want to assist in cleaning it up. A lot of people believe that it should be the municipality’s job, but we shouldn’t wait for others.”

He has also contacted Toe It who allowed him to use a trailer once a month to remove the grass and trees. Powerworld and Pumps has also offered to sponsor the clean-up.

“I think there’s an opportunity for those who have green fingers to get involved and also assist. This would be the perfect time to join the clean-up. This is definitely not a one man job.”

He appeals for others to also join the clean-up initiative and donations. The funds raised will be used to pay a day labourer and petrol for the weed eater.  Communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS, Captain Charlene van der Spuy said as a state institution, they remain reliant on resources from Department of Public Works to keep the station and surrounds in acceptable condition.

“Although we are allocated a groundsman position, additional attention is needed to achieve the standard in line with our own and public expectation. These random acts of kindness are indeed very welcome and much appreciated in the interest of the larger community”

Cllr André Beetge confirmed that resource availability was indeed a hampering factor.

“Although we, supported by a few individuals, constantly strive to assist, it requires a community effort to ensure that our local SAPS does not only look good, but that it is also pleasant for these officials to come to work and serve us as a community. As such we would likewise wish to appeal to our community and business sector to contact us on 082-718-8137 towards a coordinated contribution of goods, labour or kind so that this becomes a success.”
