Councillors face allowance cuts
COUNCILLORS are very likely to face a cut in their allowances.

Allowances are once again under the spotlight following a letter to the Southern Substructure announcing a review.

According to Dr Warwick Dorning, public relations officer for the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, a letter was sent to council in early December, stating that the minister intended reducing allowances.

Cops bite the bullet
A HIGH speed chase resulted in one Kingsburgh Protection Services officer facing the fire of six armed robbers.

Norman Payne was in the KPS response vehicle when he picked up a call. Armed robbers were fleeing from a hold-up at Kismet Supermarket in Umzinto.

Umzinto police and Umkomaas police gave chase but lost the blue Citi Golf, the getaway car, in traffic.

Child dies after abuse
POLICE are looking for a suspect in connection with the death and sexual and physical abuse of an 18 month-old boy from Ndongeni Drive, Toti.

In January the child was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries and later died without regaining consciousness.

The SAPS Child Protection Unit has opened an inquest docket and are looking for a suspect they believe can help them in the investigation.

Club accused of too much noise
BEACHFRONT flats in Toti are under attack each night – from noise emanating from Club Astro in Kingsway Centre.

According to Marlene Prinsloo, who lives in Strandburg, Beach Road, despite numerous letters to the municipality and the mayor, the only reply she has received is from acting tow clerk/ chief executive, Dudley Woollett: “I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter.”

A petition has been circulated with some 60 names of residents of flats in the area.

Baywatch for the Shoal
OFF-DUTY policemen and police reservists will from the core of a ‘baywatch’ group targetting abusers of Aliwal Shoal and surrounds.

Spearheading the project is Maj Jan Barnard of the Area Commissioner’s office, Port Shepstone.

He said the main function of Baywatch is to, “make everyone aware of marine safety, the protection of the environment and safe boat launchings.”

Security guard makes unusual ‘gate’ delivery
A SECURITY guard at a local paint manufacturing company got more than he bargained for when he had to deliver a baby at the main gates.

Ashwin Maluny, of Greys Security, was standing guard at about 2.30am when a pregnant woman approached the gates.

The woman, only known as Maureen, was very close to delivery and a piece of cardboard was put down for her to lie on. Toti firemen were called to the scene and as they arrived Ashwin delivered the baby.
