Farewell to Dalene

She never talked about retirement, she could not wait to get to work and interact with the animals.

The family and friends of Dalene Erasmus from Amanzimtoti, bade farewell to her after she lost her battle with Covid-19 recently.   She was much loved in the community and was one of the first pupils at Kuswag Skool. Dalene was a formidable women who worked for various financial institutions doing corporate financial restructuring.
She was involved in a serious motor accident at Umzumbe which crippled her. She never gave up and persisted until she could walk again 18 months later.

It was then that she was offered a position at the Lower South Coast SPCA. She became the marketing manager and was instrumental in improving their operations with the appointment of extra staff, equipment veterinarians and field officers. She turned 60 in March last year and vowed to spay 60 animals for her birthday. They eventually spayed over a hundred animals. She rescued and re-homed so many animals and also brought 15 home which became her fur-babies. She reunited a family in Malasia with their beloved pet Bibi after he got stranded in SA and they had to return. She was a real detective and was able to return stolen animals to their owners where some had been missing for years. She never talked about retirement, she could not wait to get to work and interact with the animals. Baxter was a goat and practically lived in her office where she would spoil him with biscuits.

“What a wonderful privilege it was to have known and love you for 45 years,” said her husband, Manus Erasmus. “We were married for 36 years and raised three children Stephen, Michael and Nicolene. They all married and our family grew with the addition of their partners, Danielle, Shavaun and Bryan. We now have six grandchildren, Celesté-lee, Declan, Jaiden, Chloé, Stewart and Cheyanne. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. You were such a wonderful woman and such a warrior. You will always be remembered.”
