Police come under fire 

TWO Toti CID policemen came under fire while on patrol in KwaMahkutha. The two policemen, who asked not to be named, were looking for a vehicle which had been hijacked earlier in the day. They passed a group of youths when several shots rang out. The two policemen jumped from the vehicle and pursued the suspects on foot. One youth was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a stolen weapon.

Illovo residents attack suspects 

A MAN was severely beaten by residents of Illovo and handed over to the police following the murder of an Illovo resident. Police were called in when Phithizwa Mathetwa, 50, was stabbed to death by the suspect. The suspect fled when police arrived, but were called out the next morning by resident of Illovo who apprehended the suspect and beat him up. The suspect was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

Tanya’s dreams finally take off 

A TOTI lifeguard spreads her wings when she joins the South African Air Force along with seven other women. Tanya Livingstone, 22, a full-time lifeguard who matriculated at Kingsway High, joins the first female intake. The women will undergo six months of rigorous training and testing, after which the candidates that are selected receive further training. If Tanya is successful, she will receive her wings at the end of two years of training.

Pipeline Forum to become a trust 

THE South Coast Marine Pipeline Forum is to become a trust. The decision was made as a result of plans to involve the community in the study of the areas around the marine pipelines belonging to AECI, Tioxide and Sappi Saiccor. The question of making the Forum a trust was raised after members expressed concern over the possibility of being sued for damage to property or injury to members of the public participating in gathering material for the study.
