Seed of Hope donates handmade masks

Through the SoH sewing programme, learners progress from basic sewing skills, through to fashion and product design.

The Seed of Hope (SoH) team recently distributed 1 000 handmade masks to the community of Bhekulwandle.
The masks were made by students who are part of the organisation’s sewing programme.

“The sewing team has played a huge role in our response to Covid-19,” said sewing lead, Ernestina Hlophe.

The 1 000 masks have been delivered to Khulakahle Day-Care Centre, Andrew Zondo, Dr Made Senior Primary, Ngwenya Msomi, Kingsburgh and Bhekulwandle primary schools. This initiative has not only benefited learners, but has allowed us to engage volunteers that have helped them reach their target by sewing masks in the comfort of their homes.

“Last week we celebrated our sewing students for helping us reach our target of 1000 masks for the local schools, and we also congratulated them on completing their sewing modules. This was our only programme that continued throughout the year despite the Covid-19 challenges.”

Through the SoH sewing programme, learners progress from basic sewing skills, through to fashion and product design. Each week includes a foundational business skill and Christian-based life skill, contributing to the holistic growth of each student.

” This process equips them with skills to start their own small business or pursue their career goals in clothing design. Our instructor serves as a trainer, encourager and mentor throughout the learners’ time at SoH.”

A huge thank you to all volunteers, Neli Mbatha, Minenhle Maphumulo, Minnie van Zyl, Adri Pienaar, Elna van der Walt, Azomkahle PTY, Amy Bennett, Jabulani Vezi, Margie McGregor, Mary Allen, Sonia Jerret from the Lions Club of Kingsburgh, Collette Snyder from the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church, and the St Winfreds Methodist Church.
