As the country observes the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, she will be part of various programmes in the community. The programme will create awareness on gender-based violence and will include a solidarity walk, motorcade, handing out of pamphlets and awareness talks at the local clinics.

Growing up in a neighbourhood that had many challenges, she wanted to contribute to a safer and happier community where children can grow up with pride. She now serves several organisations that focus on developing and empowering women and children in the community.

“I am the chairperson for The Better Together Network, which is an organisation that links organisations, churches, businesses and community members. This help members network and help each other to serve the needs of the community. I am also a member of the advising committee of Sparrow Trust, which deals with childhood injustices.”

Van der Spuy believes that women often struggle to be seen as leaders, while also developing close relationships, advocating for themselves and serving others.

“Being in a male-dominated profession only means that there are more opportunities for women to prove their capabilities. The gender gap only exists because we allow it to exist. Predominantly male work-forces should not scare any woman off from chasing her dreams. Whatever you choose to do with your life, stay authentic, be kind to yourself and remember that difficult times help you to build character.”
