Calling all Warhammer warriors in Amanzimtoti

An introduction meeting for the club takes place on Saturday, 28 November.

Warhammer enthusiasts are invited to join forces. Carl Coetzee, 35, is keen to start the Amanzimtoti Warhammer Club. “I’ve played the game online for about 10 years. I found out about the books, magazines, figurines and paint for it that you can buy when I visited a hobby shop in Westville.

I have started buying and painting figurines, but I haven’t been able to play it on a board yet, because I don’t know anyone else in Toti who is into it. I know there are some, because the shop owner said they have customers in Toti. That’s why I want to start a club.”

The game has two versions – Warhammer 40k, which is a Sci-fi universe similar to Star Wars, and Age of Sigmar, which is similar to Game of Thrones. The fun is in painting the plastic figurines of these universes with water-based paints and then playing tabletop games with the figurines on a board that is divided into two.

“You can play one-on-one or in teams of how many players you have. With lockdown there have been no tournaments, but hobby shops usually stage them. I’m hoping to get local venues to offer to host painting parties and tournaments.

“Once the club is up and running, I’m thinking of charging a membership fee, but this can be used to help with the costs of buying figurines and paint, with members sharing. The figurines come in a box of 10, which costs R700 a box, and about R500 to paint. One figurine can take more than three hours to paint.”

Carl has started a Facebook page ‘Amanzimtoti Warhammer Club’ and hosts an introduction meeting for the club at Dolphin Point Bed and Breakfast, 31 Wavecrest Road, Athlone Park on Saturday, 28 November from 10am to 11am. Enthusiasts from as far as Scottburgh and Umkomaas are invited. The agenda will include introducing new and potential members to Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar.
