Fundraising exceeds Amanzimtoti Lions’ expectations

The target was exceeded by R10 000.

The Lions Club of Amanzimtoti handed over a much-appreciated donation to Jona Vaughan Home on Monday, 9 November. The home that caters for more than 85 physically and mentally-challenged residents, is in dire financial constraints, due to insufficient government funding to sustain or maintain its staff compliment. Various sport and civic organisations offered assistance through fundraising initiatives.

Last month the Lions ‘locked’ up one of the newest members, ward 97 councillor, André Beetge for a fundraiser at Galleria Mall. Donors had a choice – either donate into a box to release the councillor to continue his work in the community or pledge to keep him incarcerated. Interestingly, the majority of donors opted to keep him chained to his ball.

When they failed to reach their target of R20 000, they opted to continue to fundraise through the month and Amanzimtoti Lions president, Ken Toward was elated to hand over the funds to manager Fiona Anderson. “I initially thought that R20 000 was pushing the limits, but I’m pleased to say that with the pledges and donations we received until 31 October, we donated R30 000.

This far exceeded my expectations and I thank everyone who donated, as well as the Toti community for organising and supporting all the fundraisers. Real heroes don’t wear capes and there are a lot of good people out there who have done a lot of good things for the home.

Amanzimtoti Cycling Club hosted a fundraiser ride last month and R8 250 and food items were donated to the home. Kingsburgh Lions also came to the party and donated food and clothing.

Initiated by the late Lion Bert Runmer, who had a son with cerebral palsy, in 1974, the home has always been intertwined with Amanzimtoti Lions. “With Covid-19 we haven’t been able to do any maintenance projects for most of this year. Lion Dave Dorning takes care of any emergencies that arise, but the majority of our donation will be used for maintenance. Our concern is how we are going to do maintenance and assist in the future.”

The Lions will brighten residents’ festive season with a Christmas carols evening on 3 December, followed by its annual Christmas party on 5 December. If you can help with donations or entertainment, or would like to join them to sing carols, call Lion Ken on 083-460-9226.
