Continue to donate to Jona Vaughan Home fundraiser

We will continue with the project throughout the month of October to raise awareness and funds.

The Lions Club of Amanzimtoti request the Toti public continue to donate to Jona Vaughan Home after their target of R20 000 was not reached at a fundraiser at Galleria Mall on Saturday, 3 October. The home that caters for more than 85 physically and mentally-challenged residents, is in dire financial constraints, due to insufficient government funding to sustain or maintain its staff compliment.

Opting to have a little fun while raising funds, the Lions ‘locked’ up one of the newest members, ward 97 councillor, André Beetge between 9am and 1pm. Donors had a choice – either donate into a box to release the councillor to continue his work in the community or pledge to keep him incarcerated. Interestingly, the majority of donors opted to keep him chained to his ball.

“Saturday was a little quiet, although we did manage to raise R5 015 in cash and pledges, which was about a quarter of our target. We still have pledges to come in and will continue with the project throughout the month of October to raise awareness and funds for Jona Vaughan Home,” said Amanzimtoti Lions president, Ken Toward.

“The Amanzimtoti Lions Club understands there are many indicatives running at the moment to assist the home. We applaud all those working on these projects and thank the Toti public for their generosity and community spirit.” Donations can be made into the following bank account: Lions Club Welfare, Standard Bank, account number: 051568055, reference Jona Vaughan.

Beetge said management did convey to him that the situation has not changed and will not change in the near future, with no additional funding earmarked for the home. “The staff are still attending to their 84 residents, although they have not been paid for four months. The public can also donate clean and sanitised clothing for both sexes to the home, but prior arrangements must be made before delivery.” Call Jona Vaughan Home manager, Fiona Anderson on 031-903-2111.
